journals ~ finished!

hi there ho there folks!

so... here's what i've been doing in a few minutes here and there.  it's been so hectic preparing to retire, cleaning out my office... cleaning out my clothes closet!  {casual clothes here i come!!}  but i also have lots of papers, and folders, and stuff too.  now i have to find homes for it... at home!

anywho, today's post features some newly finished {just this morning!} of mixed media journals, made from purchased composition journals, found at an office supply store {or many other kinds of 'big box' stores}.

the front and the back have been layered with a base of a gelli printed paper.  then further layered with washi tape, stamping, doodling, and other motifs, cut from the gelli printed paper itself.  in the journal shown below, i also added a flower... this is a special "inheritance" from some supplies i received from the family of katie twedt. {my former high school art teacher who passed away this spring}.  i believe the "writing" stamp is by dina wakley, and this "create with abandon" phrase always ~ reminds me of katie.

one of my hopes when i retired, was to spend days with her making art.  that didn't happen.  the lesson?  {you know what's coming, dontcha?}

don't.
wait.

some of the motifs are made from thermofax screens, this one above features a darling flower from terri stegmiller.  one of the things i'm glad i didn't wait for.  cuz many times, they don't make them for long... and i really enJoy turning to these pieces now, to put on the journals.  the flower was printed onto wax 'deli' paper, and i love how it melds into the background, so easy to decopauge.

i have listed six NEW journals in the etsy shop!

have a great weekend!

journal fever ~

hi there everyone,

with the big wedding over, this past weekend found me playing around for couple hours messing around in the studio, and well... making a {bigger} mess!

i was in the mood to make some journals, as i received a couple new stencils, from stencil girl products, and i was anxious to try them out.  {great sale, thanks mary beth}.  just a few new ones, and i'm always a sucker for word stencils, etc. i do have a wonderful collection of styles, textures, and images. and it was a great time to pull them out and start messin' around with paint.

i also pulled out some gelli plate prints from my paper stash {always good to have them ready!}, some thermofax screens, hand-carved stamps, and more for lots of layering.  it a bit of a feverish sprint, just like jungle fever, but without the mosquitos!

and the substrate was just a simple composition notebook.  i think they sell these for around $1-$2 each
at office supply stores.
i have tried printing to the cover of these journals, straight from the gelli plate... but it's not turned out to be something i like the look of.  even if i paint them first.  so i'm covering these with my handmade paper prints:
 i traced around the front cover of the notebook, and then used collage page {a type of decopauge glue} i've purchased from joann's fabric stores to adhere them to the front.  i love this one:

 this one came from my hand-carved rubber stamp:

 and i cut out several stamped images, too.  this flower happens to be designed/from roben-marie.

 as you can see... it creates quite a bit of messy chaos! {time to reorganize, as soon as i retire!
 and this will be a fun blend with this back journal cover:

i hope you'll be sure to come by in a couple days, and see the finished journals, embellished, doodled, and ready to send out to a couple friends, or maybe i'll have some to list in the shop, too. {christmas is coming!!}

have a happy day ~

gelli printed greeting cards ~ memorial day

hi friends ~

i truly hope your holiday weekend is off to a great start, whatever you may be doing, whoever you may be helping, and in whatever ways we all may be remembering ~ love ~ and sacrifices made for our lives.

i am particularly grateful for the life of our niece's young girl, 2 year-old 'rina' who was miraculously saved with several other children, by the hand of God as the daycare building she was in was demolished in the tornadoes that ripped through moore, oklahama... but God had them wrapped up in his arms in that tiny little closet that was left untouched. but for God. thank you, Lord. thank you.

and i am very thankful for the sacrifices of so many loved ones who have served this country we love, who protect our freedoms, and lay down their lives for us all, whether in military service, or in all of life.  thank you.

i'm particularly grateful to know a {very tiny} bit about that sacrifice, as my oldest son completed three tours of duty in   iraq.  i cannot imagine what he saw then, how he felt, as he coped, survived, and did his duty for america. while i realize he is only one man of a larger legacy of veterans who have served in times of war, and peace, i am humbled. i am grateful beyond words.  but God. and i thank God he was able to come back to the united states of america.

thank you for making the sacrifice, for me, for all.

these were purchased cards, printed on the gelli plate and dried, to which i then screened  using a thermofax screen purchased from margaret applin's shop.  i further embellished them with a stamp, and white ink.  {very fun to do!}  they are now newly listed in my etsy shop!
you are loved! may God help us all to know how much.

enjoy!

you are loved ~ gelli print

hey all ~ i'm trying a new reader:  it's bloglovin ~ that is ~ if i can figure it out!  {very big sigh}

i can tell you for certain ~ it was like a wonderful spring shower to see that my blog feed is 'coming alive' again and to see 'familiar faces' in the comments!  thank you - thank you.  I've missed you!  golly-gee-whiz... what a challenge to figure all of that out.  i am so grateful to get it figured out. {hopefully it lasts!}

so here's the cutie-patootie thermofax screen i purchased from terri stegmiller. i played just a tad on top of some of my gelli-printed papers.  {i'm lovin' it so much}!

yes!  yes ~ you are ~  l o v e d !
notice this cute little design, too:
thank you terri!  {i love it!}
i screened the flower design on tissue paper {just real quick on a fast lunch break} and tore the edges and added a little bit of gel medium, and presto.  instant color.  instant fun!  and of course, doodles, washi tape, and yes... that's my hand writing in black pen.  kinda had a good day in the writing department!
it may or may not be done.  only time will tell!
don't forget ~ you are loved!

how high ~ how wide mixed media

hello!

lately, it seems i haven't had enough time in the studio, and i'm not complaining.  it's just ... well spring has arrived!!  {yay!}  feels so good to have sunshine, and longer days, but i don't know where the time goes!

so in the little bits of time here and there, i play with the prints i've produced from the gelli plate printing frenzy i'm in. they're easy to take upstairs, where i can play, think, embellish, and yet be "with the family" too!  georgia thinks she needs to be in the thick of things...  isn't she funny?  you may notice that the page she is laying on is from my big bristol artbook, where i have layed down some screen printed designs ~ these are brand new from terri stegmiller!  can you say "fabulous?!"  i'm  not only a color junkie... but a design junkie, apparently.  i was so excited to get them, and play with them.  i really love the stencils terri has designed, {in fact i love all of her art... check her out!} but  i'm thrilled she is making thermofax screen designs, now, too! this particular design i printed to deli paper, and then tore and adhered them to the gelli-printed page that georgia is posing on!

these photos aren't the best... bad reflection on some of the shots, but i hope you can see the layers of color, textures, and the beautiful gelli print {that i am seemingly addicted to these days!}

 this journal page begins with a gelli print, directly printed to the bristol paper page.  i added a screen print {from margaret applin - nother fave!!}
 i also tore up a gelli print that was heavily doodled on {see the whole page here}, and adhered it to the page with gel medium, and adding washi tape, stamps... black pen highlights, as well as silver leaf foiling, more paint with twinkling h2o's.  i do love the depth that h2o's add to the page, with the sparkly goodness to top it all off... to help tell the visual story of the verse i'm highlighting as well.

and a little white metal number embellishment that i love.  been wanting to use it for the longest time ~ finally it has found a home on this page!
and the finished page, above.  i couldn't really see all the fuss about washi tape... but i'm so there now!  love the transparency, and the ease in which to use it! it adds depth as well as the patterning, and a little spark of something different, i guess.  anyway!  {i love it all!}

enJOY!

new paper collage ~

hi ~

what do you get when you cross a gelli printing plate... old paper ... fabric...  thermofax screens... paints ... paper, angelina film, silver leaf foil, and black pen?  {alot of fun for sure...}

wish i had a cute joke ... but i don't!  so it's not a mystery ~ but it is a brand new collaged piece i've been playing with.  this one is approximately 9/x12" size, and i started with a piece of bristol paper as the base.

 i began with my gelli printing plate, and made some prints, using acrylic paints, and an old fashioned journal page with gorgeous writing in it.  i then adhered it to the bristol paper.

then, i turned to some prints i've made with thermofax screens {made by Margaret Applin}, with just black paint on white fabric.  i cut it out, and stitched it to the previously printed {and dried} paper page using black thread.
 i added more paint to the page, and to the flowers themselves.   this time it was twinkling h2o's.  i played on the page, making doodles using a black pitt pen.  i added bits of torn paper too, and cut up some previously printed gelli printed paper and added it under the flowers for some pattern interest.  those were adhered with decopauge medium, including a coat over the fabric flowers, too.  i figured that will keep the white fabric from getting dirty, grimy and gray.... keeping them bright and white on the page for good contrast.   i also added white paint dots with a paint brush, as well as extra black motifs with a pen.
i used jones tones foiling in lime green, and a couple pieces of real silver leaf, too.  both are super easy to do, whether on fabric or paper.
this piece is completely frameable ~ at least that is my hope.  i have to test it out, and make sure.
paint... drip... drop and that's how i roll!  fun fun fun. so what do you think?  i haven't decided whether to add words... am thinking just to leave well enough alone!

thanks for dropping in!!
